TOWNSEND
My ancestry goes back to Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York to brothers John, Richard, and Henry Townsend. The three brothers arrived in Oyster Bay in the 1600s, but where they came from and who their father was is still unknown.
I do not know for sure which Oyster Bay Townsend I am a descendant of but through DNA testing we believe it might be Richard. I participate in the Townsend DNA project and my DNA halpogroup is R1b.
The furthest that I can currently go back to is my great-great-great grandfather James Townsend. James was born on October 16, 1816 in LeRay, Jefferson County, New York. The town of LeRay, NY was established in 1806 and is just over an hour north of Syracuse and about 30 minutes south of the St. Lawrence River and the Canadian border. In July 1839, James married Phebe “Anna” McDaniels and they had nine children. James died in 1895 in Cleveland, Oswego County, New York, which is about 75 miles south of LeRay.
James and Anna’s first child is my great-great grandfather George W. The “W” possibly stands for Wesley. George was born in 1839 in New York and died in 1911 in Eloise, Wayne County, Michigan. George is the first person in my direct line to move to Michigan, which I believe occurred around 1884.
This is a photograph of George W. taken around 1904 or 1905. It was provided to me by Ron Morey, a descendant of Albert Irwin and Hester Jane Townsend.
George W. was married twice. His first marriage was to Fannie E. (last name unknown) and they had four children together. His second marriage occurred around 1877 to Hester “Maria” Babcock. George and Maria also had four children to include my great grandfather George Edward.
George Edward was born on January 28, 1884 in Oswego, Oswego County, New York. On December 25, 1905, George Edward married Lottie C. Kittle and they had five children to include my grandfather Charles Edward. George Edward died in 1930 in Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, Michigan.
Charles Edward was born on August 2, 1908 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. On August 17, 1929, Charles Edward married Verna Mildred Schimmelenny (also spelled Schimmelpfennig) and they had six children. One of these children is my father.
My mother and father had three children. That is where I come in!
I've separated the ancestry into the following four parts: Townsend and Pfohmann (both my side), and Wilder and Maupin (my wife's side).

And finally... Genealogy is a collection of work by many people, therefore I assume some of the information posted on my site is false or based on false assumptions. I know in researching my direct line that there is a lot of conflicting information on James Townsend and his family. I hope that with better research and DNA testing, we can clear this up. Until then, let's keep working!
